DSM, a prominent global chemical products industrial company based in the Netherlands, took a significant step in 2003 by acquiring the vitamin and fine chemicals division of Roche Pharmaceuticals in Switzerland. The company has established a vast presence with 250 offices and locations in 40 countries, and its trademarks are registered in 150 countries, totaling 12,000. With an impressive portfolio of 4,600 granted patents and 9,000 more in the pipeline, DSM allocates around 300 million euros annually for research and development. Its commitment to innovation earned it the distinction of being the company with the most European patent applications for two consecutive years.
Operating across four business groups—Life Sciences, Performance Materials, Nutrition, and Industrial Chemicals—75% of DSM's business groups hold a leading position worldwide.
In 2007, DSM made a strategic move to bolster its standing in the cosmetics and specialty products sector and establish itself as a premier supplier of active ingredients. This was achieved through the acquisition of Pentapharm, a company specializing in peptide synthesis, natural molecule purification, biotechnology, skin protection model development, phospholipidation, and other cutting-edge areas. Leveraging its existing products like the vitamin series, sunscreens (Parsol®), mild and skin-friendly emulsifiers (Amphisol), hair care (Tilamar®), and other active ingredients such as Q10, DSM united the strengths of a diversified and innovative enterprise, solidifying its position as a leading manufacturer of global skincare active products.
In May 2023, DSM merged with Switzerland's Firmenich to form DSM-Firmenich, an influential player spanning the Beauty, Nutrition, and Health industries. Since the merger, the combined entity has further divided into four divisions: Perfumery & Beauty, Taste, Texture & Health, Health, Nutrition & Care, and Animal Nutrition & Health. Working together, they are driven by the mission to "bring progress to life.
